Reporter: Hello, Dr. van der Merwe You are one of the youngest doctors in South Africa to achieve such success. Why did you focus on the treatment of varicose veins?

Dr. van der Merwe: The truth is, I didn’t want to speak publicly about it because my motivation is very personal. A few years ago, my mother died from a blood clot in her leg that blocked one of her arteries.

Everything seemed normal, and there were no obvious symptoms of illness. My mother occasionally complained of numbness in her feet. Over time, greenish varicose veins appeared on her legs, causing cramps. When her doctor discovered that she had tendonitis and her condition worsened, he sent her to Cape Town for treatment.

No one suspected the severity of her condition. However, due to negligence and incorrect treatment, ulcers began to form on my mother’s legs, and the infection spread.

The doctors couldn’t save her because a blood clot had formed in her leg, preventing blood from reaching her lungs. My mother suffered a pulmonary embolism. Sadly, my grandmother also died from the same disease.

After these tragic events, I swore to dedicate my life to finding a cure for varicose veins.

I was shocked when I discovered that many modern medications and creams sold in pharmacies contain toxic chemicals that damage the veins. Pills are also harmful because they put strain on the liver.

The use of compression stockings offers no significant long-term benefits and only results in minor improvements during treatment. My mother used these treatments daily but without success.

That’s why I’ve dedicated the last three years of my life to researching this issue. During my PhD, I discovered a new approach to treating varicose veins and developed VariGone™ the spray everyone is talking about now. I realised I had created something completely new, but I hadn’t expected to spark so much interest.

Reporter: We know that many international pharmaceutical companies are very interested in your invention. Have they offered to buy it?

Dr. van der Merwe: As soon as the results of the clinical trials were published, the licensing offers for my product started coming in. A South African company offered me 50 million rands. Then, another South African company offered to buy VariGone™ for 80 million rands. The offers came in so frequently that I had to change my phone number and stop using social media.

Reporter: Why don’t you want to sell it? These offers must be very tempting, right?

Dr. van der Merwe: This may sound strange, but I didn’t develop this product to sell it. If a multinational pharmaceutical company were to buy it, the price would immediately rise, and many people would no longer be able to afford it. A local doctor told me that a product like mine should cost at least 10,000 rands. How many people in South Africa could afford that?

I want everyone to be able to buy it.

That’s why I agreed to participate in further research. I am now working with leading specialists from the University of Cape Town, the South African Society for Phlebology, and the South African National Health Research Centre. I consider this experience to be invaluable.

Reporter: Dr. Richard Campbell as the Director of the Medical Academy and a specialist in varicose veins, can you tell us about the development plans for this new product? What is innovative about the method you have developed? Is it the best product in the world for treating varicose veins?

Dr. Campbell: This is truly the best product and a completely new treatment for varicose veins. How do outdated medications work? Ineffectively, without targeting the affected area specifically, and their toxins cause side effects. These medications only treat the visible symptoms without addressing the true cause of varicose veins, which only worsens the patient's condition.

VariGone™ promotes proper vein regeneration. We tested this spray for a month on a group of 50 people with stage 1, 2, and 3 varicose veins. The study showed that people with stage 1 and 2 varicose veins experienced improvement within 9 to 10 days after treatment, while 87% of people with stage 3 varicose veins were completely healed within 11 to 12 days. Dr. Campbell: This is a more severe case of stage 3 varicose veins. All symptoms have now been successfully resolved.

Reporter: Why are venous diseases dangerous?

Dr. Campbell: If varicose veins, especially in the legs, are not treated in time, they can lead to serious complications.

Blood vessels nourish the tissue, and this function is severely impaired in areas where varicose veins have developed. As a result, ulcers can form on the skin, which, if left untreated, can worsen and become infected.

If certain types of bacteria, such as streptococcus or those found in pus, enter the skin infection caused by varicose veins, the situation becomes dangerous as these bacteria are resistant to many antibiotics.

Bandages used in the treatment of varicose veins are even more dangerous because they can lead to sepsis, a very serious condition.

The most dangerous consequence of varicose veins in the legs is prolonged blood congestion, which can easily lead to the formation of a blood clot.

If detected late and not treated correctly, the clot can break loose, enter the bloodstream, reach the heart, and then travel to other organs. If it reaches a narrowed blood vessel, like a coronary artery, it can easily block it (in the brain's blood vessels, it can cause a stroke, and if it reaches the pulmonary artery, it can cause death within minutes if not diagnosed and treated in time).

Reporter: There are many medications to treat varicose veins, right?

Dr. Campbell: Yes, there are many such medications, but they all work based on the same general principles I mentioned earlier. Most are ineffective and have many side effects. These medications usually do more harm than good.

Varicose veins cannot be cured with expensive medications. That’s a fact. If you look at what’s sold in pharmacies and listen to independent experts, you'll find that most of these medications are just a way to profit from patients.
